Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle in direct contact with the road, so their condition has a major influence on braking, steering, grip and overall driving safety. At Drouin Auto Care in Drouin, VIC, we provide professional tyre inspections, fitting, wheel balancing and wheel alignment to help keep your vehicle performing as it should.

Whether you drive a passenger car, hybrid, electric vehicle (EV), performance car or 4WD used for off-road adventures, maintaining healthy tyres is essential for everyday driving and longer journeys.

Tyres don't always fail without warning. Look out for these common signs of wear or damage:

Uneven tread wear: One shoulder wearing faster than the other may indicate incorrect wheel alignment, suspension wear or unsuitable tyre pressure.

Reduced tread depth: Worn tread reduces the tyre's ability to disperse water, increasing the risk of losing grip on wet roads.

Cracks, bulges or cuts: These can indicate damage or deterioration and may mean the tyre is unsafe to use.

Vibrations or pulling: Steering wheel vibrations or a vehicle pulling to one side can indicate wheel imbalance, alignment issues, tyre damage or other mechanical problems.

Frequent pressure loss: A puncture, leaking valve or damaged wheel may be responsible and should be investigated.

If you notice these symptoms, arrange a tyre inspection promptly. If a tyre has a bulge, exposed cords or serious damage, avoid driving on it and seek professional advice.

Incorrect tyre pressure is a common cause of premature wear. Underinflation can increase heat build-up and rolling resistance, while overinflation can affect the contact patch and contribute to uneven wear. Incorrect wheel alignment, worn suspension components, overloading, harsh driving and failing to rotate tyres when recommended can also shorten tyre life.

Different vehicles place different demands on their tyres. EVs and hybrids can have substantial weight from their battery systems, while instant electric motor torque can increase wear depending on driving style. Performance vehicles need tyres suited to their power, speed rating and handling requirements. For 4WDs and off-road vehicles, the right tread pattern and construction depend on whether you mainly drive on sealed roads, gravel, mud or rocky tracks.

Check tyre pressures regularly when the tyres are cold, following the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressures shown on the tyre placard or in the owner's manual. Inspect the tread and sidewalls for damage, and have uneven wear, vibrations or recurring pressure loss investigated.

At Drouin Auto Care, we can inspect your tyres, recommend suitable replacements and arrange professional fitting, balancing and wheel alignment where required. We offer tyre options including Maxxis, Kumho and Vitour Performance, with other sizes and types available to order. As an approved Vitour Performance Tyres dealer, we can also discuss the brand's five-year replacement guarantee, subject to its applicable terms and conditions.

What Should You Do to Maintain Your Tyres?

Regular pressure checks, appropriate wheel rotations, correct wheel alignment and prompt attention to suspension or steering problems can help extend tyre life. Avoid overloading your vehicle and choose tyres that match its specifications and your driving conditions. For 4WD owners, remember that off-road pressure adjustments should follow appropriate vehicle and tyre guidance, with pressures restored for sealed-road driving.

Every vehicle service at Drouin Auto Care includes a tyre inspection and a report on our findings, helping you identify potential problems before they become more serious.

Automotive Servicing and Repairs in Drouin

Are you experiencing uneven tyre wear or noticing your vehicle pulling to one side? It might be time to get your wheels aligned. At Drouin Auto Care, we offer expert wheel alignment services to ensure your vehicle drives smoothly and your tyres last longer.

Tyres are essential for your vehicle’s performance, safety, and fuel efficiency. At Drouin Auto Care we offer a full suite of tyre services, including comprehensive inspections, precise fittings, expert repairs, and regular maintenance to keep your vehicle roadworthy.

When it comes to wheel alignment, three critical angles need to be set correctly: caster, camber, and toe. Let's delve into what each term means and how it affects your driving experience.

Understanding Wheel Alignment: Caster, Camber, and Toe

Caster refers to the angle created by the steering pivot point from the front to the rear of the vehicle. Positive caster angles help with stability at higher speeds and improve the vehicle's steering returnability. Negative caster angles can make the vehicle more difficult to control and lead to uneven tyre wear.

Camber is the tilt of the tyre when viewed from the front of the vehicle. If the top of the tyre tilts inward (towards the vehicle), it’s known as negative camber. Conversely, if it tilts outward (away from the vehicle), it’s called positive camber. Incorrect camber settings can cause premature tyre wear and affect your vehicle's handling.

Toe alignment refers to the direction in which the tyres are pointed relative to the centreline of the vehicle. If the fronts of the tyres are closer together than the rears, it is termed as toe-in. If the rears are closer together, it’s toe-out. Proper toe alignment ensures even tyre wear and a stable, comfortable ride.

There are several reasons why your tyres might wear unevenly:

Improper Wheel Alignment: Misaligned wheels can cause tyres to wear out unevenly and more quickly.

Over or Under-Inflation: Incorrect tyre pressure can lead to wear on the edges or centre of the tyre.

Worn Suspension Components: Damaged or worn-out suspension parts can affect alignment and lead to uneven wear.

Driving Habits: Aggressive driving, such as sudden stops and fast cornering, can contribute to uneven tyre wear.

Having your wheels properly aligned is crucial for several reasons:

Extended Tyre Life: Proper alignment ensures that your tyres wear evenly, prolonging their lifespan.

Improved Fuel Efficiency: Misaligned wheels can create more rolling resistance, which means your vehicle uses more fuel.

Enhanced Handling and Safety: Correct alignment helps your vehicle handle better, especially during emergency manoeuvres, making your drive safer.

Reduced Wear on Other Components: Proper alignment reduces strain on your suspension and steering systems, potentially saving you money on repairs.

At Drouin Auto Care, we use state-of-the-art alignment equipment to ensure precise measurements and adjustments. Our experienced technicians are dedicated to providing top-quality service to keep your vehicle in optimal condition.

Inspecting your tyres regularly is one of the most effective ways to ensure that your car and family are secure when out on the road. Paying attention to your tyres and replacing them when necessary is a fundamental element of vehicle maintenance.

Having sound tyres is a pivotal component for the overall security and operation of your vehicle as they are the only component in contact with the road, affecting the ability to break, corner and speed up safely.

The lack of tread on a tyre can add 10 metres of extra distance to come to a stop on a wet surface, while incorrect pressure can increase fuel usage by up to 3%. The price of tyres is a major expense and by taking good care of them you can expand their lifespan, thus saving you money.

At Drouin Auto Care we sell a wide range of tyres to suit vehicles of all shapes, sizes and uses. If you have any doubts about the safety of your tyres please don't hesitate to come and see us for a bit of advice.
